The difference we make

Every year the Angelou Centre helps hundreds of women and children from Black and minoritised communities recover after experiencing violence, abuse or unfair treatment.

Recovering from violence and abuse can’t be achieved with transactional support. We work with women and children for as long as they need us to gain stability and independence in every aspect of their lives – accommodation, trauma recovery, immigration status, English fluency, career goals and skills. Most women move on from our service ready to start a new life.

Our identity as a by and for organisation is key to helping us achieve long-lasting and positive outcomes for women and children who may face systemic barriers in mainstream support services.

We estimate that fewer than 5% of women who access Angelou’s holistic support return to abusive families, and 95% of those formerly in refuge housing go on to live independently.

The work we do in the community helps break cycles of abuse and exploitation. And the work we do with children changes mindsets, disrupts harmful family dynamics and shapes the future.

”‘Survivors accessing Angelou’s unique and distinct model of intersectional holistic support describe the space as one where they feel held, ‘safe’, ‘confident’ and ‘changed’, ‘included’ and ‘Understood’.’
